Historic Sacred Places of Denver
By Michelle Pearson, Photography by Annette Vanasse

Discover the art, architecture and history of Denver’s sacred places.

Since 1883, Annunciation Catholic Church at 3601 Humboldt Street has played a role in the history of Denver.  It was established to serve Irish, Slavic and German immigrants who worked in the smelters and for the railroads in northeast Denver.  Its 1904 construction, under the direction of Fr. Henry Robinson helped to stall the encroachment of industrial development from the South Platte River bottoms, thus preserving the immediate neighborhood and protecting the neighborhoods east and south of it. The Romanesque-Style interior of Annunciation is filled with excellent examples of sculpture, stained glass, scagliola and artwork.
