The Arapahoe Acres Historic District

By Diane Ray, Photography by Frank Ooms
Tour the first Post-World War II residential subdivision listed as a National Register Historic District.

Many houses in Arapahoe Acres have roof and wall planes that extend beyond the body of the house, blurring the boundaries between the building and the surrounding landscape.  In contrast, the Sitterman House at 2970 South Lafayette Drive

Built in 1955 and designed by Edward B. Hawkins has a framed wall plane, which creates a strong sense of shelter.  Evenly projecting side wall, roof, and floor planes are finished to form a continuous frame around the composition of glass and blind windows at the second-story level.  A side view reveals the distance that the planes project beyond the body of the house.
